General Education is a group of courses that provide a broad educational foundation and promote lifelong learning and personal, professional and social growth. The overall goals of a General Education at Edison State Community College are characterized by six learning outcomes. The General Education outcomes are assessed annually throughout the courses that are offered. The results of the assessments are evaluated and alterations to these assessments are made, if needed, to increase their effectiveness. If results indicate, changes may be made to courses or professional development conducted across the curriculum in order to enhance the focus relating to specific outcomes. This assessment procedure allows Edison State to verify that students receiving a General Education have increased their competency regarding the General Education outcomes listed below.

    Oral Communication Written Communication
Critical Thinking and Inquiry Interpersonal Skills and Teamwork
    Mathematics Diversity

Career programs develop outcomes that describe the general goals that the program emphasizes. Specific outcomes for each program are published in the catalog and serve as the basis for an Annual Career Program Assessment.

Faculty members in each program area develop an outcome-based assessment procedure. Many career programs require students to take a capstone course or participate in an internship. Portfolio reviews, reports from internship supervisors, reviews of projects from capstone courses and work samples taken from selected courses are commonly used as the basis for an annual assessment.

Outside professionals and/or college staff members are typically utilized to assess the quality of students' work with the aid of a rubric designed to gather information related to program outcomes.

The three- to five-year Program Review is a longitudinal evaluation as compared to the annual program assessment. This process is intended to provide the information necessary to make decisions regarding changes in courses and programs, including the elimination or addition of courses or the elimination of a program. For example, faculty and facilities need to be academically current, fiscally responsible and meet the needs of the community. If an issue is detected as a result of the program review, changes to the program are made.

Supportive Services include the academic and student support departments in place to assist students as they complete their studies. Departments develop outcomes that describe the general goals emphasized in the services they provide. These include what students need to know as they complete their studies, types of additional services offered and how to obtain them and expectations and responsibilities of students. Students complete assessments annually through courses that are offered to evaluate the student outcomes. Actions are taken to increase student knowledge, if needed, based on the findings. This assessment provides insight into student personal competency to increase student success, retention and completion.

The general purpose of assessing student perceptions is to understand their concerns and their level of satisfaction regarding academic and support services. In order to assess student perceptions, Edison State Community College administers two alternating surveys—the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) and the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI). Edison State has chosen these two surveys due to the breadth of topics that are included in each. To allow improvements to be reflected in results, the surveys are administered in rotating odd-numbered years. We also survey our current students annually using a Student Satisfaction of Services Survey.
