Edison State Community College offers a wide range of manufacturing and engineering degree and certificate pathways. Now, thanks to a $10,000 Gene Haas Foundation grant received through The Edison Foundation, the College can offer scholarships providing financial support to students taking its CNC Programming course.

This 3-credit-hour course covers the fundamentals of manual programming for numerical control machines. Students learn common formats and codes for manual programming, how to create a manual CNC program, proper setup procedures for CNC machines, to make parts to print specifications, and more. This class is ideal for students in Mechanical Engineering Technology degree and certificate pathways.

“CNC machine training programs teach students how to program and operate CNC machines. Skills learned include reading blueprints, programming, and operating CNC lathes and mills,” said Steve Sykes, Edison State Professor of Manufacturing/Industrial Management. “CNC machinists can work in industries such as automotive, aerospace, medical, and technology. Graduates of CNC machine training can pursue careers as CNC programmers, operators, or even start their own businesses. There is a growing trend for companies to hire more CNC programmers.”

Scholarships offered under the Gene Haas Foundation grant will cover all costs of the CNC Programming class, including tuition, fees, and textbooks. Students will need to have completed the prerequisite course, Survey of Manufacturing Processes, before taking CNC Programming.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must complete Edison State’s Scholarship Application by March 1, 2025. Visit www.edisonohio.edu/apply to complete the application.
